Causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain – Ouch My Back Hurts!

Sciatica is not a disorder but a term used to describe radiating pain starting from the lumbar area down to the buttocks and over the posterior side of the lower limbs. Causes of sciatica have been directly associated to several spinal disorders. The disorders of the spine, especially those which occur in the lumbar area, result to the compression of the sciatic nerve which is pinpointed as the main cause of sciatica.

There are five sets of paired nerves which are present in the lumbar spine. These nerves combine to create the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body which runs from the back of the pelvis, under the buttocks and down to the hips into each of the legs. The nerve roots are generally present in the entire nervous system of the body. It functions to transmit nerve impulses to all the other parts of the body.

A herniated or bulging disk is the most common cause of sciatica. The bones in the spine are separated by pads of cartilages called the disks. It acts as cushion and shock absorber to the vertebrae, to protect it as you move. Aging is said to be the main cause of a herniated disk. As you grow older, the disks deteriorate and become more brittle. The gel like substance which is contained on the outer wall of the disk drips out as it develops tiny tears over the course of time. The herniated or bulging disk presses adjacent nerve roots and compresses delicate nerve tissue which is manifested through sciatica. Its danger doesn’t end in nerve compression since it can also cause nerve inflammation due to direct exposure to acidic chemical irritants which is contained within the disk. People who have damaged disks on the lower back often experience numbness of the extremity, pain, tingling sensation and weakness of the buttocks or legs.

Spinal Stenosis is another disorder which causes nerve compression. It occurs when certain areas in the spinal canal becomes narrowed. It then creates pressure on the spinal cord and its adjacent nerve roots. When the clogging of the nerve canal occurs at the lower back or lumbar spine it is termed as lumbar spinal stenosis.

The disorder that commonly affects the lumbar spine is called Spondylolisthesis. It is a degenerative disk disease characterized by slipping of one vertebra towards an adjacent vertebra. It often causes leg pain due to the displacement of the bone resulting to nerve root compression.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed by muscle spasm developed in the piriformis muscle it give rise to Piriformis Syndrome. The build up of muscle spasms on the piriformis muscle affects the sciatic nerve which passes through beneath it. A radiating pain felt at the back of the thigh is usually noted.

Spinal tumors, trauma and injury are other probable causes of sciatica. The Secret to Relieving Sciatic Back Pain

Do you suffer from acute or chronic back pain? If your answer is yes, you are not alone.


Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor or a hospital emergency room and is the second most common reason employees miss work.


Back pain especially in the lower back affects up to 90 having more than one occurrence. Although there are many back suffers, it is often difficult to determine the true cause of the pain.


One of the most common types of back pain is sciatic. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower spine, travels through the buttock and sends nerve endings down the leg. Sciatica pain is caused from the irritation of the sciatic nerve and is typically felt in the low back, behind the thigh and down below the knee.


When the sciatica pain is at its worst, suffers may need to rest for a day or two. Resting for longer periods of time however usually makes the sciatic pain worse. As a result, it is important to keep moving and exercise as much as possible.


There are 2 types of exercise that are very helpful in addressing sciatica pain. Strengthening exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal and back muscles providing better support for the back. Stretching exercises target muscles that cause pain when they are tight and inflexible. A regular program of strengthening and stretching exercises usually speeds recovery more quickly and helps prevent future flare ups.


Low impact aerobic exercise, such as walking or swimming is also used to help over come acute or chronic sciatica pain. Aerobic activity promotes the exchange of fluids and nutrients creating a better healing environment. It also releases the body’s natural pain killers or endorphins, which also help alleviate sciatic pain.


Being a long-time sciatica suffer myself (over 10 years), I have always been a strong proponent of keeping active and maintaining a steady exercise regime. Although this really does help, there are no guarantees – once you have back issues, you never seem to be back pain free – many doctors will tell you there is no cure.


A year ago I re-hurt my back and have suffered with it ever since. Although I am a very active person, there were many physical activities that I had to steer clear of – especially any activities requiring lifting or bending. If I happened to roll onto my back during the night, it would take me several hours in the morning to loosen up.

Within one week, I noticed a significant improvement in my mobility (it was much easier to get out of bed in the morning) and a noticeable decrease in back pain. With these results, I was definitely motivated to keep going.


I have been using the sauna now for 3 months and it has definitely made a difference in my life. I feel years younger and I have been able to introduce many activities such as running, cycling and gardening back into my daily and weekly schedule.

What Is Sciatic Back Pain?

What is Sciatic back pain and how does it affect an individual, these are some questions people search for information on, when they experience some form of lower back pain. Pain in the back may be caused from a variety of ailments such as arthritis, a draft or cold or injury; however sciatica may usually be associated to a disc problem.

Sciatic back disc problems are usually in the form of “herniated disc”, “bulging disc or pinched nerve”, other terms may include slipped disc, torn disc or ruptured disc.
